Vancouver Winter Olympics -- Day 1: Saturday, February 13, 2010

At long last, we headed to the airport courtesy of our buddy Tammie Read at 6:30 am on Saturday, February 13 (the day after the Olympic Opening ceremonies). We had been a little nervous about the trip because we didn't know what to expect but we were definitely excited to be going.

We had two smooth flights to Vancouver, yay! Rachel Claire felt a bit sick on the first flight to Chicago but she rallied once we got on the big plane to Vancouver. I was a bit nervous when we were leaving Indy in freezing fog and the plane had to get de-iced, but all was well once we were in the air. I actually got to read for a bit on the plane to Vancouver because Rachel Claire slept for about an hour. She is a really great traveller and did great on the planes.

When we got to the Vancouver airport, we were amazed by how cool it was, it was almost like a museum! There were lots of cool things in there. And many welcoming volunteers who showed us the way to go. We took a long time getting off the plane, so it seemed like we were the only ones there. I asked if they were expecting big crowds and they said, yes, any minute now! I was glad to get through there when it was empty.

Of course when you fly west, you get there when it's lunch time there even though it should be dinner time for you....so we had some snacks and continued our day. We took the Canada Line to a stop near the home of our hosts for the week: Holly & Roger. It was raining when we arrived but just a light drizzle. Once we got home and settled in our place, we headed downtown to pick up some tickets we had ordered through StubHub.

It was so exciting to finally be there! A little scary to not know our way around, but we found everything ok. Stopped at a Starbucks for an obligatory mocha/hot chocolate break. Saw some cool things arond town, including the Olympic flame from afar. Rachel Claire was in good spirits and willing to walk (rather than be carried) which was awesome! We had dinner with Holly & Roger and their son Will before crashing into bed.

The Olympic flame is at the waterfront at the end of this street....better photos later in the week.
